TCS Sydney Marathon sees course record and timing errors

The TCS Sydney Marathon, now in its second year as an Abbott World Marathon Major, saw over 41,000 participants compete. While Ethiopia’s Addisu Gobena secured victory and a new course record with a time of 2:04:42, the event was marked by significant timing and administrative errors.

Technical issues led to Australian runner Michael Savvas being erroneously listed for 90 minutes as having a marathon world record time of 1:44:01, despite having dropped out of the race at the 12.5-kilometre mark. Additionally, race organizers mistakenly identified American runner Ethan Shuley as the winner of the Australian Marathon Championships during the finish-line ceremony.

The event also featured notable international participation, including 36 runners from Greece and three from Cyprus. Among the Greek participants was Kostis Manioudakis, a Cretan deputy mayor who completed the race to fulfill a personal goal of competing on five continents.
