TCU upholds liability of former Canto do Buriti mayor

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has upheld the liability of former Canto do Buriti mayor Nilmar Valente de Figueiredo and the company Aguiar e Albuquerque Construções Ltda. – ME regarding irregularities in federal funds used for a municipal sewage system.

The project involved R$ 3 million in federal resources from the National Health Foundation (Funasa) between 2011 and 2012. Following a reconsideration appeal, the court partially granted the defense, reducing the required reimbursement from approximately R$ 3.3 million to R$ 503,498.94, which represents the verified loss to federal coffers.

The court's recalculation was based on technical reports acknowledging that 83.21% of the work had been executed and reached a useful stage, noting that the project had received an operating license in 2012.
