TDK develops ultra-thin mirror for smart glasses

TDK has announced the development and successful demonstration of a ‘meta-optics mirror’ designed to enable smart glasses that resemble conventional eyewear. The ultra-thin mirror, measuring approximately 150nm in thickness, can be embedded directly into eyeglass lenses.

This technology is intended for use with Direct Retinal Projection (DRP) displays, which project laser light directly onto the retina. Unlike previous DRP systems that required bulky curved mirrors to direct light to the eye, this flat meta-optics mirror uses nano-sized reflective elements to control light direction. This allows for a more compact, lightweight, and stylish design.

The mirror maintains high visibility with a visible light transmittance of 80%, reducing rainbow patterns caused by light interference. TDK notes that the technology offers potential cost advantages over waveguide-based displays because it can utilize semiconductor manufacturing processes. While current demonstrations are monochromatic, the company aims to achieve full-color capabilities and mass production within several years. TDK plans to exhibit a demonstration unit at CEATEC 2026.
