TDK to invest 40 billion yen in thin film inductor capacity for AI demand

TDK Corporation plans to invest approximately 40 billion yen over the next three years to expand the production capacity of thin film inductors. This strategic move aims to meet the surging demand driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

The investment will be split between two Japanese locations: 35 billion yen will be allocated to a factory in Yamanashi Prefecture to boost capacity for AI XPU chip inductors, while the remaining 5 billion yen will go to a Yamagata Prefecture facility to enhance production for optical transceivers. As AI semiconductor performance increases power consumption, high-efficiency power solutions like vertical power delivery—which integrates power components directly with XPUs—are becoming critical.

The broader Japanese electronic components sector is experiencing significant growth due to AI infrastructure needs. Companies such as Murata Manufacturing and Ibiden have reported strong performance and upwardly revised forecasts. Analysts note that while traditional markets like smartphones and automobiles remain important, AI-related demand is now a primary driver for the sector, positioning Japanese manufacturers as key suppliers in the global AI supply chain.
