Teacher Jamie Varley convicted of murdering infant Preston Davey in Blackpool

On June 16, 2026, a vigil was held in Blackpool to remember 13‑month‑old Preston Davey, who died after being placed in the care of his adoptive parents, teacher Jamie Varley and his partner John McGowan‑Fazakerley. After a seven‑week trial at Preston Crown Court, Varley, 37, was convicted of murder, grievous bodily harm, cruelty, sexual assault and taking indecent images, while McGowan‑Fazakerley, 32, was found guilty of allowing Preston’s death and sexual assault. Sentencing is scheduled for June 18.

Police investigators said Varley’s behaviour at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where Preston was taken unconscious, immediately raised suspicion. Body‑worn video captured Varley describing the infant’s death as a “short bath” despite no evidence of water, and forensic evidence showed severe internal injuries. The case has prompted scrutiny of adoption procedures and child‑safeguarding practices.
