Teacher Normunds Vamzis of Liepāja Music, Arts and Design School Killed at Priekule Festival
On 26 July 2026 a conflict erupted during the Priekule town festival in Latvia, resulting in a severe head injury to 41‑year‑old teacher Normunds Vamzis. Despite ambulance assistance, Vamzis died at the scene.
Police arrested a junior State Police inspector who was found intoxicated at the time of the assault. A criminal case has been opened under Article 125(3) of the Criminal Code for causing grievous bodily harm leading to death. The investigation will be transferred to the Internal Security Bureau.
Liepāja Music, Arts and Design School mourned the loss, noting Vamzis had led the clothing‑design programme since 2006 and was instrumental in developing the school’s fashion shows and student achievements in national contests.
