Teacher shortages affect public schools in Madagascar

Public schools in Madagascar are facing significant teacher shortages, particularly in rural and isolated areas. In the Sofia region, school directors are forced to manage multiple grade levels simultaneously, often moving between different classrooms to supervise students and distribute materials.

In the Analamanga and Androy regions, schools are operating with reduced staff and multigrade classrooms. Some schools in Androy are functioning with only one or two teachers. While a representative from the Ministry of National Education acknowledged the shortage, they noted that the issue is concentrated in rural zones, whereas urban areas currently face a surplus of teachers.
