Teacher shot at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, New Mexico

A special education teacher, identified as Kelly Matthews, was shot multiple times at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, New Mexico, on Friday morning. Following the shooting, the victim was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Hobbs police apprehended a juvenile suspect after a brief foot chase in the area surrounding the school campus. Local community and political leaders have expressed support for Matthews and the school community while praising the swift response of first responders.

As a result of the incident, Hobbs High School officials canceled the scheduled homecoming parade and rescheduled the varsity football game to Saturday morning.
