Teacher union elections underway in Uruguay and Argentina

Teacher union elections are underway in Uruguay and Argentina, though the processes face different circumstances. In Uruguay, the Federación Uruguaya de Magisterio (FUM) is conducting elections for its national and departmental authorities for a new three-year term. The voting period runs from August 31 to September 5, restricted to affiliated teachers. In the Cerro Largo department, a mobile ballot box system will be used to facilitate voting in various schools.

In Argentina, elections for the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la República Argentina (Ctera) are marked by tension in the province of Jujuy. Local educators and representatives from the Asociación de Educadores Provinciales (ADEP) have raised concerns regarding electoral transparency. Allegations include a significant reduction in the voter registry, which dropped from approximately 7,000 to 3,900 eligible voters, and the centralization of polling stations to only nine locations across the province. Critics argue these changes disproportionately affect rural and retired teachers.
