Teacher unions in Guinea and Gabon address labor issues

In Guinea, the National Education Union (SNE) marked International Teachers Day in Kankan by acknowledging government compliance with a January 2026 protocol. Michel Pépé Balamou, Secretary General of the SNE, stated that the government has honored financial commitments, including revalorized chalk, documentation, and preparation bonuses, as well as increased housing and transport allowances.

Balamou also addressed the status of 4,304 municipal contract teachers who were not selected following practical classroom evaluations, noting that provisions for this group are included in the existing agreement. He commended the government and the President for respecting the signed commitments.

In Gabon, the Teachers Union of the Base (SEB) held its annual meeting in Libreville under the theme of union historicity. SEB President Honorine Angue Mintsa Ondo called for stronger union action centered on listening to the concerns of teachers, particularly those in remote provinces and distant educational institutions. The meeting also featured legal discussions regarding the preservation of union rights.
