Teacher unions in Sierra Leone and Ghana demand salary reviews
In Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) is calling for a government review of teacher salaries and working conditions. Foday Kuyateh, the union's Western Regional Secretary, stated that teachers currently earn less than the equivalent of US$100 per month. The SLTU has formally requested discussions with the government ahead of the September school reopening to address pay disparities between teachers and other public-sector officials.
In Ghana, three major teacher unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG)—have issued a joint demand regarding salary scales. The unions are urging the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that all newly promoted teachers are automatically placed on the appropriate salary grades corresponding to their new ranks.
The Ghanaian unions noted that this automatic adjustment has been the standard practice since 2020. They warned that any attempt to change this arrangement or impose a new system without consulting stakeholders would be fiercely resisted.
