Teachers in Greece and Cyprus announce strikes and protests
Educational organizations in Greece and Cyprus are organizing protests and strikes to address systemic issues in the schooling sector. In Greece, the Teachers' Federation of Greece (DOE) has called for a strike on September 30. The federation claims the government is attempting to project a “virtual reality of normality” in schools despite significant teacher shortages and operational problems. They are also citing concerns over the rising cost of living and the perceived devaluation of the teaching profession.
Simultaneously, teacher organizations including POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK are mobilizing in response to legislative changes regarding the teacher appointment system. These groups argue that current regulations leave long-serving educators in a state of permanent job insecurity. To protest these measures, they have scheduled a joint press conference for October 5, 2026, followed by a demonstration outside the Presidential Palace on October 8, 2026. The organizations warn that the government's failure to provide job security could lead to severe staffing crises in public schools starting in 2027.
