Angola teachers launch national strike over career disputes
A national strike by public school teachers in Angola began on September 21, organized by the National Union of Teachers (SINPROF). The union reports nearly 100% adherence in most provinces, resulting in closed schools and empty classrooms across the country.
The first phase of the strike is scheduled to last until October 15. The protest follows a breakdown in negotiations between the union and the government regarding structural issues, specifically career progression and academic profile management. While SINPROF claims they have reached agreements on nine points, two critical issues remain unresolved.
SINPROF Secretary-General Admar Jinguma stated that the union is willing to suspend the strike if the government provides concrete guarantees that the remaining demands will be met. Meanwhile, the opposition party UNITA has called for the government to resume dialogue to protect students' interests. The Ministry of Education has instructed schools to record teacher absences, a move that could impact salaries.
