Teachers in Piraeus face housing crisis ahead of school year
The Piraeus branch of the Secondary Teachers' Association (ELME) has issued an urgent appeal for housing assistance for newly appointed and substitute teachers ahead of the new school year. The initiative seeks rental properties or temporary hosting for educators assigned to Piraeus, Salamis, the Saronic islands, and Kythira.
Teachers are facing severe financial pressure due to high rental costs and low wages. According to the association, new appointees earn approximately 800 euros per month, while substitutes earn around 950 euros. These figures make finding affordable housing difficult, especially for those who must maintain a second home outside of Attica for family reasons.
In addition to the solidarity appeal, ELME Piraeus is demanding systemic changes, including significant salary increases, the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th month salaries, and the establishment of a housing allowance for all teachers. The association also calls on the state to utilize public buildings, available housing, and hotel units to provide organized accommodation for educators.
