Teachers' unions demand salary payments in Mexico and increased funding in US
In Zacatecas, Mexico, the Movimiento Democrático del Magisterio Zacatecano (MDMZ) has threatened renewed protests if the Secretariat of Education fails to meet agreements signed on October 20. The union is demanding the regularization of salaries for approximately 800 workers, some of whom have gone up to 69 days without pay. Additionally, union members are seeking the formal reinstatement of personnel following legal resolutions.
In Chicago, United States, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has criticized the Board of Education for failing to secure adequate state funding for Chicago Public Schools. While CTU President Stacy Davis Gates praised Mayor Brandon Johnson for pledging $285 million in TIF funds, union leaders are calling on Governor JB Pritzker and the General Assembly to fulfill funding formulas. The CTU alleges the state owes the school system approximately $6.8 billion, warning that insufficient state support could lead to cuts in special education, arts, libraries, and athletics.
