Team Malizia suffers foil damage after marine life collision
Team Malizia, led by skipper Boris Herrmann, has reported a collision with a large marine animal or fish during the Ocean Race Atlantic. The impact occurred while the vessel, Malizia 4, was traveling at 25 knots in approximately 16 knots of wind.
The collision damaged a foil hydraulic cylinder. While the crew is reported to be safe and there are no structural damages to the boat, the technical issue has impacted the team's performance. The hydraulic cylinder has been locked in position to ensure the foil remains secure.
Prior to the collision and recent wind shifts, Team Malizia had held a significant lead of up to 42 nautical miles. However, unfavorable wind conditions, including frequent wind shifts (headers) in their northern position, allowed competitors such as 11th Hour Racing, United by the Ocean, and DMG Mori Global One to overtake them. 11th Hour Racing has currently taken the lead in the race from New York to Lorient.
