Teatr Współczesny faces loss of key stage in Szczecin
The Teatr Współczesny in Szczecin faces a potential loss of its important Scena Nowe Sytuacje stage. The National Museum in Szczecin plans to take over the technical facility at Wały Chrobrego at the beginning of 2027 to implement a project funded by European funds.
The theater's staff has expressed significant distress over the decision, noting that the facility also houses essential costume warehouses and craft workshops. Actors and union representatives warn that the loss of this space could result in the disappearance of dozens of annual performances, as the theater currently lacks an alternative venue capable of hosting these specific productions. While the city has previously suggested the theater would remain at its current location until mid-2028, the museum's plan for an earlier takeover has caused unexpected tension.
This development occurs against the backdrop of the theater's 50-year history in Szczecin. Since 1976, the institution has operated as an independent stage within the National Museum building, maintaining a significant cultural presence despite long-standing challenges regarding funding and the lack of its own dedicated headquarters.
