Italian Summer Theatre Festivals Light Up Communities Across the Country

A wave of theatre festivals has unfolded across Italy this summer. The XV edition of "Teatro (alla deriva)" in Pozzuoli marks fifteen years of independent theatre, featuring productions such as "Break Catena" and "Le preziose ridicole" before concluding with performances by singer Flo on July 19 and a final show on July 26.

The "Al riparo degli alberi" festival runs from August 3‑7 on the Altopiano della Vigolana, offering a mix of theatre, dance, circus and workshops for families, including a children’s lab, a photographic walk and a puppet show by Eva Sotriffer.

In Monticchio, "Il Bosco delle Storie" (July 27‑29) turns the town into an open‑air narrative park, with legends, historic figures and interactive workshops for children and families.

The 43rd Premio Leonforte awards ceremony highlights five contemporary plays staged in Leonforte throughout August, addressing topics such as digital violence, climate crisis and generational anxiety.

Additional cultural events include the "Ad alta voce" talk with forest manager Francesca Locatin in Pozza di Fassa (July 19), WoodFest in Pontecagnano (until July 28) combining regional food, live music and sustainability talks, the fifth Segesta Teatro Festival (July 29‑August 2) starring Lella Costa and Arianna Scommegna on themes of war and peace, and the Tindari Festival’s national premiere of "Le Supplici" on July 24.

Together, these programmes illustrate a vibrant summer season for Italian theatre, engaging local audiences with diverse artistic expressions and community‑focused experiences.
