Teatro Barreto Júnior hosts free performances of Lorca's Yerma

The play “Yerma Atemporal – Voz de Mulher,” an adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s tragedy “Yerma,” will be performed with free admission at Teatro Barreto Júnior in Recife on September 3 and 4.

The production reimagines the Spanish poet’s narrative within a Northeastern Brazilian cultural context. The play explores themes of maternal obsession, social morality, and the constraints placed upon women. This specific staging features live musical accompaniment, including singing and percussion, with a theme song written by director Newton Moreno.

Directed by Simone Figueiredo and Paulo de Pontes, the performance utilizes non-verbal expressions to bridge Lorca’s work with local cultural manifestations. The cast includes Célia Regina, Fernanda Spíndola, and several others, supported by musical direction from Douglas Duan.
