Teatro Colón commemorates National Dance Day and 1971 aviation tragedy

Argentina commemorates National Dance Day on October 10, marking the anniversary of a 1971 aviation tragedy. On that date, an aircraft carrying nine dancers from the Teatro Colón's stable company crashed into the Río de la Plata while attempting to return to Aeroparque after departing for Trelew. There were no survivors.

The accident claimed the lives of prominent dancers Norma Fontenla and José Neglia, among others. The loss significantly impacted the Argentine ballet scene during a period of unprecedented popularity for the art form.

To honor the memory of the dancers, the Teatro Colón will broadcast a rehearsal of the ballet ‘Manon’, choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, via its social media channels on Friday, October 10.
