Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires marks 90‑year legacy of Argentine theater
The Teatro Colón, inaugurated on 25 May 1908, celebrated its 90th anniversary as one of the world’s premier opera houses. Its monumental architecture and renowned acoustics have made it a cultural landmark comparable to venues in Vienna, Milan and Paris.
The theatre’s history is linked to a long line of Buenos Aires performance spaces, from the 18th‑century Teatro de la Ranchería to the 19th‑century Teatro Argentino and the original Teatro Colón of 1857‑1888. Over the centuries these venues shaped the city’s cultural life, serving as stages for opera, ballet, concerts and community gatherings.
Recent performances have highlighted the venue’s artistic range, including a recent rendition of Richard Strauss’s Salomé, underscoring the Colón’s ongoing role in presenting challenging and celebrated works.
