Teatro de la Maestranza presents Romeo and Juliet opera set in 1940s Italy

The Teatro de la Maestranza is presenting a new production of Charles Gounod’s opera ‘Roméo et Juliette’, a production originating from the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Premiering on Friday, October 23, the performance marks a major highlight for the start of the 2026-2027 season.

Stage director Luca De Fusco has reimagined the Shakespearean tragedy by moving away from traditional medieval settings. Instead, the production is set in 1940s Italy during the final stages of World War II, specifically within the territory of the Republic of Salò. This modern setting replaces swords with pistols and focuses on the conflict between generations and the weight of social conventions.

The production utilizes scenography based on projections to illustrate the evolving emotions of the protagonists. Musical direction is led by Sasha Yankevych, with Dmitry Matvienko conducting the Real Orquesta Sinfónica. De Fusco noted that the cast was selected not only for their vocal perfection but also for their strong acting capabilities.
