Teatro de la Zarzuela celebrates 170th anniversary in Madrid
The Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid is celebrating its 170th anniversary. Originally opened on October 10, 1856, the venue was established by artists including composers Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and Joaquín Gaztambide to provide a dedicated stage for the Spanish lyric genre.
To mark the milestone, October 10 has been declared World Zarzuela Day. Commemorative activities include a live broadcast from the theater on Radio Nacional de España, musical performances, and the launch of the 'Mujeres de Zarzuela' project. This initiative, developed with Wikiesfera, aims to document the biographies of approximately thirty women who contributed to the history of Spanish lyric theater on Wikipedia.
