Teatro La Fenice announces operatic double bill in Venice

Fondazione Teatro La Fenice has announced a double bill for its 2025-2026 Lyric and Ballet Season, featuring two works centered on the American Dream. The production, directed by Gianmaria Aliverta, will consist of Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Telephone” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti.”

“The Telephone,” an opera buffa composed by Menotti in 1946, explores the complications of romantic communication through the character Lucy, whose preoccupation with phone calls creates a barrier to human connection. “Trouble in Tahiti,” composed by Bernstein in 1952, depicts the domestic crisis of a couple, Sam and Dinah, navigating loneliness and unexpressed desires within a bourgeois American setting.

The performances are scheduled to take place at the Teatro Goldoni in Venice from October 9 to 14, 2026.
