Setúbal International Theatre Festival presents 23 shows on human rights, migration and climate

The 28th Festival Internacional de Teatro de Setúbal (FITS) runs from 20 to 29 August, offering 23 performances by Portuguese and foreign companies. The programme includes 14 shows in the official section and nine in the ‘off’ section, plus theatre talks, an exhibition, a book launch, short films, three concerts and a “walk of inclusion”. Themes focus on human rights, immigration, war, the climate crisis and social inclusion.

Festival coordinator Patrícia Paixão highlighted the diverse and timely lineup, while artistic director José Maria Dias used the launch to call for a dedicated medium‑size cultural venue in the city. The municipal council remains the main partner, providing €45 000 in funding and logistical support, with the total budget around €150 000 backed by the municipality, the Directorate‑General for the Arts and other partners. The event also features companies from Spain and Brazil, underscoring its international dimension.
