Teatro Principal de València closed due to safety risks
The Teatro Principal de València has been temporarily closed due to serious structural risks and safety deficiencies. Technical reports cited grave concerns regarding fire protection compliance, evacuation issues, and risks of falling debris, with one official warning the building could become a ‘ratonera’ (trap).
The closure has sparked political criticism. Carlos Fernández Bielsa, spokesperson for the PSPV in the Diputación de Valencia, blamed the provincial government led by Vicent Mompó for a lack of planning and coordination. He argued that the structural problems were known for years and that the current administration failed to anticipate or address these needs.
Critics noted the timing of the closure was particularly striking, occurring just one day after the theater had announced its upcoming cultural programming. While the necessity of the closure for public safety is not disputed, the failure to prevent the building from reaching such a state of deterioration has drawn significant scrutiny.
