Teatro Sesi hosts Eduardo De Filippo’s play Filumena Marturano
The Brazilian theater group Tapa is presenting “Filumena Marturano,” the most famous play by Italian playwright Eduardo De Filippo, at Teatro Sesi on Avenida Paulista. Directed by Eduardo Tolentino de Araújo, the production features Sandra Corveloni in the lead role.
The play follows a former prostitute who fakes her own death to marry a wealthy, selfish man in an attempt to secure stability for her three children. The narrative explores social drama and popular comedy, examining the roles of men and women in society. Director Tolentino noted that while the character is not a traditional feminist, her struggle to navigate life reflects the realities faced by many women in Brazil.
The performance includes Neapolitan songs and monologues, set against a backdrop of the end of World War II in 1946. The cast also includes Maria do Carmo Soares, Walter Breda, and André Garolli.
