TeatroUNAM presents play exploring the world of insects
TeatroUNAM, in co-production with the Coordinación Nacional de Teatro del INBAL, is presenting the interdisciplinary play ‘La dignidad del insecto: vida y muerte de lo imperceptible’. Directed by Hebzoariba H. Gómez, the production explores the complex lives of insects, such as ants and beetles, through a blend of theater, science, memory, and fiction.
The play examines the concept of ‘Umwelt’—the unique world experienced by every living being—and challenges the human tendency to overlook the miniature universes existing beneath our feet. It aims to move beyond simple biological lessons to question how humans relate to the natural world and highlight how small life forms maintain planetary balance. The performance is scheduled to run at Teatro Santa Catarina until August 29.
In a biological context, the behavior of insects like ants demonstrates highly organized survival strategies. For instance, ants engage in necrophoresis, a collective hygiene behavior where workers remove deceased colony members to prevent the spread of pathogens like fungi or bacteria. This process is often triggered by chemical signals, such as oleic acid, which allow the colony to maintain a clean and safe environment for the queen and larvae.
