Tech companies announce major job cuts in Silicon Valley and Washington

Tech companies in the Silicon Valley region have announced 12,947 job cuts through early September, representing a 27 percent increase compared to the previous year. Meta leads the reductions with 3,715 positions, followed by Amazon with 917, Cisco Systems with 706, and Oracle with 652. Other companies reporting cuts in California include LinkedIn, Intuit, eBay, Lucid Group, Walmart, Visa, and PayPal.

Oracle reported cutting approximately 21,000 jobs, or 13 percent of its workforce, within a twelve-month period, citing the implementation of artificial intelligence as a factor. Globally, the tech sector has seen significant volatility, with over 180,000 layoffs recorded so far in 2026.

In Washington state, Microsoft has officially implemented cuts affecting 605 positions as of September 4, 2026. The majority of these, 493 roles, are located at the Redmond campus. These cuts are part of a broader restructuring of Microsoft’s gaming organization, specifically affecting the Xbox division.
