Tech companies shift supply chains amid US-China tensions

Global technology companies are adjusting their operations in response to escalating geopolitical tensions between China and the United States.

Google has informed suppliers of its plan to cease all Pixel device production in China by 2027. The company aims to move the manufacturing of its phones, smartwatches, and headphones to Vietnam and India to reduce dependency on Chinese manufacturing. Google has already been transitioning processes to Vietnam since 2019, recently moving complex new product introduction phases there to leverage established supply chains.

Simultaneously, Huawei remains a central figure in the strategic competition over telecommunications and artificial intelligence. Western governments, particularly the United States, view the Chinese firm as a potential instrument of Beijing’s state policy due to Chinese legislation that requires companies to cooperate with national security interests. This debate extends beyond consumer electronics to critical infrastructure, including 5G networks, fiber optics, and data centers.
