Tech giants and the evolution of the garage startup myth

Many of today’s most successful global companies originated as side projects or in unconventional settings like garages and dormitories. Notable examples include Apple, which was developed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak while they held other jobs, and Slack, which evolved from an internal communication tool used during the development of a failed video game.

Other major entities such as Instagram, Oculus, and Under Armour also grew from personal projects or niche ideas into multi-billion dollar brands. Similarly, Khan Academy began as a way for Sal Khan to assist a relative through educational videos on YouTube.

While the 'garage myth' is often romanticized, the reality varies. For instance, Microsoft was founded in a motel and a Harvard dorm rather than a garage, and Steve Wozniak has noted that the Jobs family garage was primarily used for storage rather than design. However, companies like HP, Amazon, and Google did utilize garages as early workshops. The success of the Silicon Valley model is often attributed to a regulatory environment that allows for experimentation and low initial costs, a contrast to the more stringent administrative barriers found in the European Union.
