Tech giants Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft execute major layoffs amid AI pivot
Major technology and corporate entities have implemented significant workforce reductions throughout the first eight months of 2026. These layoffs are largely driven by strategic pivots toward artificial intelligence, automated agents, and cloud infrastructure, as well as efforts to address profitability and shifting consumer metrics.
Oracle reported eliminating approximately 21,000 jobs over the preceding year, representing about 13% of its workforce, citing the adoption of AI technologies. Meta conducted multiple restructuring phases, including a wave in May that affected roughly 8,000 employees, to create financial headroom for expanded AI spending. Microsoft also commenced a restructuring cycle in July affecting approximately 4,800 employees, with the Xbox gaming division absorbing a significant portion of the impact.
In the financial sector, JPMorgan Chase reported cutting 63 additional jobs at its Jersey City office, bringing its total job reductions for 2026 to 541.
