Tech industry faces scrutiny over hardware destruction and warranty disputes

Reports have emerged regarding controversial hardware management and warranty practices within the tech industry.

A former employee of a large technology firm claims the company intends to destroy over 100 high-end MacBook Pro laptops, specifically models featuring Apple’s M4 chip and 48 GB of RAM, following mass layoffs and an office closure. The allegation, shared on Reddit, has sparked debate over corporate waste and whether functional devices should be donated, reused, or distributed to staff instead of being destroyed.

Separately, Micron is facing criticism over its warranty fulfillment for Crucial products. Following the cessation of consumer activities for Crucial in late 2025, a customer reported that Micron offered a reimbursement for a faulty 48 GB DDR5 memory kit that was significantly lower than current market replacement costs. Due to increased demand for memory driven by artificial intelligence, the proposed refund of approximately $241.86 represents only about 37% of the cost required to purchase an equivalent kit today.
