Tech industry layoffs reach 130,000 as firms pivot to AI

The global technology sector is undergoing significant workforce reductions, with approximately 129,994 employees laid off across 309 companies. Major industry players, including Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Meta, and Amazon, have implemented various restructuring measures to improve operational efficiency and redirect capital toward artificial intelligence investments.

In the United States, tech layoffs from January through August reached at least 94,046, representing a 16.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. While layoffs peaked in May, recent months have shown a decline in the frequency of job cuts.

A notable trend in these reductions is the strategic pivot toward AI. Data indicates that AI was cited in 33% of tech layoff events this year, a significant increase from 1% in 2024. Analysts suggest that while AI is not necessarily replacing human workers directly, large firms are cutting costs in other departments to fund heavy spending on AI infrastructure and productivity tools.
