Tech innovations target rising cloud costs and AI data center power demands
Technological advancements are addressing the rising costs and energy demands of data management and AI processing.
WeatherBug, a US-based weather information company, successfully reduced its Amazon S3 storage costs by 80% within six months. The company achieved this by using Amazon S3 Storage Lens to visualize data usage and implementing lifecycle policies to manage datasets, such as removing expired delete markers and uncompleted multipart uploads. They utilized the AI coding agent tool Kiro CLI to analyze access patterns and generate optimization strategies.
Simultaneously, the industry is looking toward optical-electrical convergence to combat the massive power consumption of AI data centers. As the International Energy Agency predicts global data center electricity consumption could reach 1,000 TWh by 2030, technologies that replace electrical data transmission with light are becoming critical. NTT is positioning optical-electrical convergence as a core component of its IOWN initiative, aiming to reduce network power consumption by 100 times. Beyond data centers, this technology is expected to impact optical computing, autonomous vehicles, and quantum computing.
