Africa's digital landscape shifts through AI adoption and new investments
Africa is experiencing a significant digital and industrial transformation driven by artificial intelligence, data sovereignty, and shifting economic models.
In the technology sector, data sovereignty is becoming a strategic priority as African regulators implement stricter rules on data storage and management. This has prompted cloud providers like AWS to adapt their architectures to ensure local control. Simultaneously, Chinese AI models are gaining traction due to their lower costs and superior performance in local languages, such as the Sunflower project in Uganda which utilizes Alibaba’s Qwen architecture.
On the investment front, South Korea has approved a $170 million loan to Tanzania through its Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) to establish an AI and digital technology school. This project aims to build educational infrastructure, including AI laboratories and robotics equipment, to strengthen local technical skills.
Economically, the continent faces a structural challenge known as the ‘missing middle,’ where entrepreneurs struggle to access capital between microfinance and large-scale corporate lending. While tech-driven fintech continues to grow, there is an emerging shift toward prioritizing tangible manufacturing, logistics, and energy projects to increase Africa's share of global manufacturing value.
