Tech leaders discuss the evolving role of AI in software development
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and current Google CEO Sundar Pichai have provided insights into how artificial intelligence is reshaping the landscape of software engineering. Schmidt noted that AI coding tools are now capable of producing code that exceeds the capabilities of even highly skilled programmers from previous generations. He suggested that the role of future developers will shift from manual coding to acting as architects who design desired outcomes and direct AI tools to implement them.
Sundar Pichai emphasized that while AI is actively assisting in model research and code generation—noting that Google has seen a one-third reduction in code rollbacks—the technology has not yet reached a stage of autonomous, recursive self-improvement. He maintained that human oversight remains essential, characterizing the current state of AI as a collaborative system where researchers work alongside AI agents rather than being replaced by them.
