Tech neck: How prolonged screen use impacts neck health and posture
Prolonged use of digital devices such as smartphones and laptops is increasingly linked to a condition known as ‘tech neck’. This condition involves neck pain and strain caused by holding the head in a forward or downward position for extended periods.
Dr. Abhijit Chavan, an orthopaedic surgeon at SPARSH Hospital, notes that this posture places extra stress on the cervical spine and muscles like the upper trapezius and levator scapulae. Symptoms can include neck stiffness, shoulder tension, headaches, and restricted movement. There is also an increasing association between tech neck and visible lines or creases around the neck.
To mitigate these effects, experts recommend maintaining proper posture by keeping the head aligned with the spine and positioning screens at eye level. Simple exercises, such as chin tucks, head turns, and side stretches, can help maintain mobility. Taking regular breaks to stand and move is also advised to prevent staying in one position for too long.
