AI technology drives semiconductor growth and startup funding

The artificial intelligence sector is undergoing significant shifts across finance, industry, and security. AI startup Instinct has raised $250 million in a Series B round, bringing its total funding to $350 million and achieving a $2.5 billion valuation. The company’s AI assistant, which manages tasks via text and phone calls, is seeing increased adoption despite privacy concerns.

In the semiconductor industry, Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson reported that AI is driving a major growth inflection, increasing demand for advanced computing architectures and memory technologies. This demand is being fueled not only by human users but also by AI agents that consume significant compute capacity.

However, the rise of AI presents new challenges. Researchers at Trellix have identified the commercialization of malicious AI tools in criminal underground forums, designed to facilitate sophisticated cyberattacks. Additionally, a study from the Wharton School suggests that AI shopping agents lack objectivity, as their recommendations can be drastically shifted by a single external information source. In the labor market, studies indicate that while AI may not be the primary cause of all tech layoffs, it is significantly impacting employment prospects for recent graduates in high-exposure roles.
