Tech Support Scams Prompt US Alerts and Australian Prevention Framework

In the United States, tech support fraud remains the most reported crime among seniors, with victims losing over $3.4 billion in 2023 and an average loss of about $34,000 per person. Scammers employ unsolicited calls, pop‑up messages, spoofed IDs and demand payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency, urging victims to grant remote access. Experts advise consumers to ignore unexpected tech‑support offers, never share personal or financial information, and avoid granting remote access unless they initiated the request.

Australia has introduced a Scams Prevention Framework (SPF) that moves beyond public awareness campaigns. The SPF requires service providers to detect, report, disrupt and respond to scam activity using a control loop that includes monitoring, intelligence sharing and consumer assistance. By shifting responsibility from individual vigilance to institutional safeguards, the framework aims to reduce the reliance on last‑minute human decisions and curb the overall effectiveness of scammers.
