Technical Chamber of Greece backs Larissa railway station redevelopment plan
The Regional Department of Central and Western Thessaly of the Technical Chamber of Greece (ΤΕΕ/ΤΚΔΘ) unanimously approved participation in the process to repurpose the Larissa railway station. GAIAOSE issued a non‑binding expression of interest covering roughly 233 ha for mixed‑use development including residential, hospitality, commercial, office, cultural and leisure functions, with proposals due by 15 October 2026.
The Chamber welcomed the initiative but stressed that the site contains the active passenger station and essential rail infrastructure, so any plan must be integrated with the future railway hub, urban mobility, safety, freight operations and city cohesion. It has already recommended undergrounding the rail line as a preferred scenario and examined an eastern bypass with a new passenger station. New zoning must not create irreversible commitments that would jeopardize undergrounding or other comprehensive rail solutions, and a detailed technical, environmental and flood assessment is required before locating a freight terminal.
