Technical Chamber of Greece demands accountability over Diakopto–Kalavryta rack railway
The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) – Western Greece Section has issued a formal letter to the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport regarding the ongoing suspension of the historic Diakopto–Kalavryta rack railway. The line has remained out of service for seven months following a suspension decision on March 12, 2026, citing safety concerns.
TEE President Evangelos Karachalias is calling for an investigation into the management of Hellenic Railways (formerly OSE) to determine if there were administrative failures or omissions. The Chamber specifically requests a funded, comprehensive restoration plan with a binding timeline for safe reopening.
Further concerns were raised regarding a recent act by the Court of Audit on October 2, 2026, which reportedly blocked the signing of a planned Programmatic Agreement. The TEE is seeking clarification on the legal basis for the suspension, the technical recommendations that preceded it, and whether geological and hydrological risks identified after the August 2023 fires were adequately addressed through preventive measures.
