Technical Chamber of Greece proposes new rules for traditional stone paths
The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) has launched a public consultation for a new Technical Directive (TOTEE) regarding the sustainable construction, restoration, and maintenance of stone-paved paths in mountainous and island regions.
Historically, these stone-paved paths, known as 'kalderimia', served as essential infrastructure for movement in isolated areas. However, the rise in outdoor and hiking tourism has led to improper maintenance efforts. Previous interventions often used inappropriate materials like concrete and cement mortars, which altered the historical and architectural character of these traditional structures.
The new directive aims to establish scientific standards based on traditional dry-stone principles to promote natural drainage, environmental protection, and climate resilience. The consultation is intended for engineers and local government organizations to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage in traditional settlements and historical sites. The public consultation period is scheduled to run until September 20, 2026.
