Technical considerations for high-refresh-rate monitor performance
Achieving high refresh rates on gaming monitors requires a functional synergy between hardware and software settings. While moving from 144 Hz to 240 Hz offers a theoretical reduction in frame interval from 6.94 ms to 4.17 ms, the actual benefit depends on the graphics processing unit (GPU) maintaining sufficient frames per second (FPS). If a GPU cannot sustain the target frame rate during intense gameplay, the advantages of a higher refresh rate are negated.
Panel technology also plays a critical role; OLED panels with extremely low gray-to-gray response times can impact motion clarity more significantly than raw frequency alone. Furthermore, users may encounter issues where Windows 11 fails to display refresh rates higher than 60 Hz. This limitation is often caused by bottlenecks in the hardware chain, such as the graphics card, video output, cables, or adapters, rather than the monitor itself. Users can troubleshoot this via advanced display settings to ensure the correct frequency is selected.
