Technical debt explained as a time-based loan

Technical debt is a metaphor for the trade-offs made in software development, where teams choose speed or immediate functionality over ideal architecture. This decision acts as a loan of time that must eventually be repaid. While deliberate debt can be a strategic tool to meet deadlines or validate ideas, unmanaged or accidental debt—often caused by inexperience or lack of planning—can lead to significant issues.

A critical aspect of this concept is the interest that accrues. Every new feature built upon a shortcut becomes more difficult and time-consuming to implement, creating a compounding tax on future development. This often results in a gradual decrease in team velocity, where small changes begin to require disproportionate amounts of effort. While technical teams are typically aware of these trade-offs, non-technical stakeholders may remain oblivious to the growing burden of unmanaged debt.
