Technical differences between RAM and SSD longevity

Computer RAM and Solid State Drives (SSD) utilize fundamentally different methods for storing data, leading to significant differences in their physical wear and tear. RAM functions by using transistors as valves to manage electrical charges within tiny capacitors. This process occurs via metal pathways at low voltage, meaning the components do not face physical destruction from the constant cycle of charging and discharging. Consequently, RAM can undergo nearly half a billion cycles per year without measurable wear.

In contrast, SSDs store data by trapping electrons on an isolated conductive island known as a floating gate. This gate is surrounded by ultra-thin insulating layers. Each write operation requires forcing electrons through these insulators, which causes gradual physical degradation over time. While RAM is rarely replaced due to hardware failure, users typically upgrade it due to increasing software demands, such as AI applications and modern gaming, or due to technological shifts like the transition from DDR4 to DDR5 memory standards.
