Technical failures in Vienna cause electric vehicle charging fines

Technical malfunctions at electric vehicle charging stations in Vienna, Austria, have resulted in unexpected parking fines for drivers. The issues, which began on Thursday, stem from connectivity disruptions in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks provided by telecommunications company A1, affecting the charging infrastructure managed by Wien Energie.

The disruptions also impact the Wien Energie Tanke mobile application, preventing drivers from monitoring their charging status. In one reported instance in the Alsergrund district, a driver received two separate fines after a technical error caused their charging session to stop prematurely without notification. One fine was issued for lacking a valid parking permit, while the second was for parking in a zone restricted to active charging only.

Wien Energie and A1 have stated that affected drivers may appeal these penalties.
