Technical University of Crete joins RE-GROWTH project for bio-based construction materials
The Technical University of Crete is participating in the RE-GROWTH European research project, which focuses on developing and evaluating innovative structural materials produced through biological processes. Led by Professor Dionysia Kolokotsa, the university's contribution involves using residual biomass and biological raw materials to create sustainable construction solutions.
The 36-month project is funded by Horizon Europe and the New European Bauhaus Facility. It is coordinated by DRAXIS Research Ventures and involves ten partners from seven European countries. A key research focus is the laboratory development of ecological panels made from mycelium and plant biomass to enhance thermal and acoustic performance in buildings.
In addition to material development, the Technical University of Crete will lead the assessment of thermal, optical, and acoustic properties of these new bio-produced materials. The project also includes participatory design and social acceptance activities, coordinated with the Municipality of Chania and the Technical Chamber of Western Crete, to promote a circular economy and reduce the environmental footprint of the construction sector.
