Technical University of Munich study critiques EU electric vehicle emission metrics
A meta-study by the CirculaTUM research consortium at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has sparked debate regarding how the European Union calculates vehicle CO2 emissions. The study critiques the current EU 'tailpipe approach,' which classifies battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) as zero-emission by only measuring exhaust gases and ignoring the environmental impact of production, energy supply, and recycling.
By analyzing 19 previous studies and 47 scenarios, researchers found that BEVs offer an average CO2 reduction of 41 percent compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. While BEVs performed better in approximately 92 percent of the analyzed scenarios, the results varied widely: in the most favorable conditions, they reduced emissions by 89 percent, whereas in less favorable scenarios, they could emit up to 21 percent more than comparable combustion vehicles.
The findings have caused friction within the academic community and among policymakers. While some political figures have used the data to challenge the phase-out of combustion engines, other TUM professors have criticized the study's methodology and communication. The debate arrives as the EU prepares to vote on the Automotive Package, which could influence future CO2 targets.
