Techniques for stress reduction and nervous system regulation
Various techniques can be utilized to manage stress and regulate the nervous system through breathing, movement, and mindfulness.
To improve sleep quality and reduce nighttime tension, methods such as diaphragmatic breathing, body scanning, and progressive muscle relaxation are recommended. Diaphragmatic breathing involves slow, controlled inhalations through the nose to activate a relaxation response, while body scanning requires a mental sweep from feet to head to identify and release tension. Progressive muscle relaxation involves tensing and then releasing specific muscle groups to discharge physical stress.
For morning routines, yoga instructor Elena Sepúlveda suggests that short sequences of postures can provide a calm activation of the body. Unlike caffeine or intense exercise, which primarily trigger the sympathetic nervous system, yoga combines physical movement with conscious breathing to engage the parasympathetic nervous system. This approach aims to increase energy and body temperature while simultaneously lowering stress levels.
